“Resistance: Women of Peace and Justice in Former Yugoslavia and Albania”

We are thrilled to announce that we officially launched “Resistance: Women of Peace and Justice in Former Yugoslavia and Albania” at the Reporting House.

This book is the result of a two-year project implemented by the Pro Peace in Kosovo and the Youth Initiative for Human Rights – Kosovo (YIHR KS). The book offers a profound exploration of the crucial role women played in resisting war, violence, and political oppression in the former Yugoslavia and Albania. Through the personal testimonies of eleven women, Resistance highlights their defiance of patriarchal systems and nationalist ideologies to champion peace, justice, and human rights. Their relentless fight for truth and reconciliation, by documenting atrocities, organizing protests, and leading humanitarian efforts, serves as a powerful testament to their courage and determination.

The launch event featured a compelling panel discussion moderated by Lura Limani, with:
Feride Rushiti, interviewee; Sonja Biserko, interviewee; and Korab Krasniqi, researcher. With opening remarks by Kristen Schubert, Pro Peace Germany, Marigona Shabiu, YIHR Kosovo, moderated by Vjollca Islami Hajrullahu, Pro Peace Kosovo.

This important conversation centered on peace, justice, and the lasting impact of women’s activism in the region. Feride Rushiti emphasized that achieving justice for war crimes is essential, not only for the victims but also for their families, to build a future where “all voices are heard.” She underscored that recognition, rehabilitation, and justice are the three pillars of sustainable peace.

Sonja Biserko posed a crucial question: “What are we leaving for the next generation?” She stressed the urgency of learning from history to ensure that human rights are upheld for all and that past atrocities are never repeated.

This book, and the conversations it sparks, serve as a powerful call to action, honoring the women who stood against injustice and inspiring future generations to continue their fight for peace.
